Alternative Treatment of IBS.

by Dr. Phil Hariram.
Conventional Medicine for Irritable Bowel Syndrome is unsatisfactory and fails most IBS patients. The knowledgeable patient, after diagnosis is made, tend to use alternative therapy for Irritable Bowel Syndrome and only return to their family doctor for support or medication for intolerable symptoms such as abdominal pain or severe diarrhoea.
Alternative treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome takes various forms. The most popular are herbs and supplements. The best herb for IBS is peppermint.
Abdominal pain is the most disabling symptom of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and peppermint oil with its ability to relax smooth muscles is an effective anti-spasmodic. It is effective in relieving cramp like pains. It also helps relieve gas. Peppermint for Irritable Bowel Syndrome should be in the form of enteric coated capsules so that it passes through the stomach intact to be released into the intestine. This helps to reduce the risk of heartburn, a recognised side effect  for sufferers using peppermint for IBS.
Other herbs for IBS are fennel, camomile, ginger, caraway and oil of evening primrose.

Another alternative treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome is probiotics. Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum maintain the bacterial equilibrium in the large gut. Imbalance creates problems. There is trial evidence to show benefits of probiotics for IBS but the results are hampered by trial criteria and low numbers. It is hoped that one day a combination of probiotic agents with proven benefits will be available.

Body Mind is an alternative treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome that is gaining in popularity. This treatment is in the form of psychotherapy, biofeedback, cognitive behavioural therapy and hypnotherapy.
All these treatments show benefits but the most effective is hypnotherapy for IBS. Whole body relaxation and stress management in addition help treat the secondary symptoms of anxiety, panic and depression.

It is not clear whether Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture for IBS are effective. Some say acupuncture does help but trial results are inconclusive.
A trial in 1996 involving 116 patients that fulfilled the Rome Criteria were evaluated using Chinese Herbs against placebo. The results showed improvements of symptoms in patients using Chinese herbs for IBS compared to placebo and this was maintained up to 14 weeks on the group that stayed on the herbs after completion of the trial.
Other forms of alternative treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome are
  • Fibre supplements to improve motility.
  • Controlling food intolerance.
  • Colonic hydrotherapy.
Soluble fibre such as psyllium (ispagula) affects transit time and helps constipation. Flaxseed is a mild laxative. Dandelion root in the form of a tea is used to treat bloating in Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Food intolerance in IBS is evaluated by excluding foods for a period of time, reintroducing in sequence and recording any effects.
Colonic hydrotherapy cleanses the colon and is used in sluggish bowels. It is uncertain whether there is place for this treatment for IBS. If used it should be in combination with other treatment for IBS.

Whatever alternative treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome you use, make sure you tell your family Doctor before a prescription is issued for conventional treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
