Common Diets for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Diets for Irritable Bowel Syndrome will

help control IBS.

To control their symptoms, most patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome keep track of all the foods that they have eaten. This does not just involve checking the types of foods but also the way it was prepared.

Consider the food -chicken, you should not only indicate "chicken" in your food journal. You have to be very specific. You should include how it is prepared. You should also include the time and the mood you are in during eating a particular meal. By listing all these factors, you can distinguish what triggers your symptom and what foods have no effects at all.

Your food journal should be filled regularly to enable effective tracking. The most suitable time to gather details is at night. This way you are unlikely to miss anything. Bear in mind that every detail is important and should be given due attention. A chocolate bar or any relatively insignificant food can make the difference when determining the most suitable diet plan for your Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Common diets for irritable bowel syndrome should exclude foods that are known triggers. You can ask your dietician or physician to build a general diet plan. You can then taper it to your specific needs based on the data written in your food journal.

Large amounts of dietary fiber especially soluble fiber should be an essential component of common diets for irritable bowel syndrome. It helps to eliminate or improve constipation.

If you have sufficient fiber in your regular diet, your stools are likely to become bulky and softer. So if constipation is a serious concern, the best way to combat compacted stool is to soften and increase stool bulk. Fiber is not digested and passes through the gut unaffected. This increases stool bulk.

Foods likely to cause problems, on the other hand, are those known to trigger the symptoms. Foods with high fat content are a trigger since they slow down digestion of foods. Fat has to be emulsified, and then broken down before it can be absorbed into the blood stream. This process is slow.

When following a diet for irritable bowel syndrome, it is important to have regular meals. Irritable Bowel Syndrome develops following abnormal function of the intestinal tract especially the colon. Practice eating at the same time everyday. By doing so, your gut will get used to the habit. This will regulate the bowel movement and improve contractions of the intestinal muscles.

If you have diarrhea-predominant Irritable Bowel Syndrome, the best IBS diet for you should be in smaller portions. Large food intake can easily cause strong contractions of the large gut and produce severe pains. Diarrhea will result in extra fluid loss with the watery stools. It is important that you follow your dietician's advice and consume adequate water.

Be careful that you avoid caffeinated drinks, carbonated sodas, and alcohol-based beverages. Caffeine will stimulate the intestines and can result in making diarrhea worse while carbonated drinks produce more gas, which further aggravates the condition. Any distension in a sensitive colon will cause pain.

Dairy food can be a trigger and care should be taken when including it in common diets for irregular bowel syndrome. Lactose intolerance can be associated with IBS. If you are lactose-intolerant, it is best that you substitute cows milk proteins with soya or goats milk. Or better yet, use an enzyme product to facilitate the breaking down of lactose.

You may still continue consuming milk products. However, in some common diet for irritable bowel syndrome, it may be necessary that lactose is completely removed. In such case make sure you add in products that contain high content of vitamin B, calcium and protein.
