Irritable Bowel Syndrome Overview.
|
Overview
of IBS,
causes,
symptoms and treatment.
Irritable
Bowel Syndrome is a common
disorder strongly associated with major
burden of illness, poor quality of life, high utilisation of health
services and high rate of absenteeism from work or school.
It is regarded as
a
functional illness of the gut.
Unlike other
illnesses
such as Asthma, Diabetes or Hypertension, no one
knows the true causes of Irritable
Bowel
Syndrome.
Treatment of
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is also a major problem. In other
illnesses treatment can be administered in direct relation to the
severity of the illness. In mild cases of most illnesses treatment is
in low doses or control is by lifestyle modification, and in more
severe cases the dose is increased or other agents added. Treatment of
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is, however, different. No one treatment
presently available works for a large group of patients
In most major illnesses, there is no
cure. Treatment in these illnesses
are to maintain control on a long term basis. Similarly there is no cure for
Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The
difference, however, is that
health professionals cannot maintain adequate long term control in IBS.

In major
illnesses,
tolerance to treatment is uncommon and the drug
prescribed will continue to be effective. Symptoms of Irritable
Bowel Syndrome usually improves
when a new treatment is tried. Often,
however, the improvement becomes less and eventually this treatment of
IBS becomes
ineffective.
In other
illnesses,
patients readily accept their condition if the
cause, effects and treatment have a solid basis. The causes are usually
defined, symptoms are predictable, treatment effectiveness is
high and control is expected.
In IBS this is not
the
case. Look what an IBS
sufferer has to contend with.
- No
one knows the true cause of Irritable
Bowel Syndrome.
- Symptoms
of IBS
varies. Some patients may have severe diarrhoea, constipation,
abdominal pains or bloating or a combination of these.
- Treatment
of IBS is
largely ineffective. There is no one treatment that works for all the
symptoms of IBS nor is there a drug that works for the majority of
IBS patients.
- As
conventional treatment of IBS falls significantly below expectation,
IBS partients are told
to "Live with it." In other illnesses, apart from other functional
illnesses, patients would be appalled if told they have to live with it.
- It
is a chronic illness and there is no cure.
- It
becomes clear to
most IBS sufferers that to
gain control, it is up to them. A large percent turn to alternative
treatment for IBS.
It is not surprising
that IBS sufferers feel frustrated . The burden is
high yet there is no cause or abnormality to account for their terrible
and debilitating symptoms. To make matters worse,
they are told that
stress and
IBS are linked. "Reduce stress and your IBS will be
better",
they are told. Sadly their symptoms can be unpredictable and flare ups
can be
sudden and unexplained.
Expectation is one
of
the cornerstones in healing and treatment. What
expectation is there in the treatment of
Irritable
Bowel Syndrome? Not
Much. People, however, who refuse to let IBS control their lives have
better control of their symptoms
of Irritable Bowel Syndrome than those
who allow their IBS to control their lives.
Once diagnosis is
made
there is a strong link between IBS and the how
it is percieved by the Subconscious MInd. If you adopt a negative
attitude about your IBS, then your symptoms could get worse. On the
other hand, if you adopt a positive attitude, who knows your symptoms
may well improve. This is the basis upon which treatment such as
psychotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback and
hypnotherapy are producing such excellent results.
So adopt a
positive
attitude towards your IBS. This will also help to
ward off anxiety, depression and hopelessness that is so common in Irritable Bowel
Syndrome.
Good Luck.
