Irritable
Bowel Syndrome: Signs And Symptoms.
Identifying
the problem: Learn about your Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Signs and
Symptoms
Irritable bowel syndrome is easy to identify if you
know what to look for. Following specific guidelines, will help
establish the diagnosis. However, this website's advice is to consult
your family doctor for examination and investigations before a
diagnosis is made.
Sometimes symptoms of IBS can confuse. This is mainly because
irritable bowel syndrome has a lot of different symptoms. Some are
minor symptoms while others are severe.
The signs and
symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome vary from person to person. This
is why certain criteria has been agreed by experts for proper
diagnosis.
What are the signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome?
A generic list of symptoms cannot answer this question.
As said before, the signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome vary
from person to person and this means that irritable bowel syndrome
cannot be generalized into a set of symptoms. By classifications there
are three types of irritable bowel syndrome and their symptoms are
different:
1) Diarrhoea predominant Irritable bowel
syndrome (IBS-D) – This type of
irritable bowel syndrome has the following signs and symptoms:
a) Urgency in defecating – People suffering from this type of irritable
bowel syndrome often need to rush when they have to defecate. This
irritable bowel syndrome sign and symptom is the most worrying and can
be very inconvenient
especially if a person is working. There is a high risk of fecal
incontinence.
b) Wet/loose stool – This means that the stool the person is evacuating
from the body has excessive water content. The stool could be very
loose or in a liquid form. In this type of IBS, residue pass through
the colon too quickly and not enough water is absorbed.
c) Abnormal bowel frequency – A person suffering from IBS-D has to move
his or her bowels at least more than 3 times a day. As there is
significant water loss, rehydration is important to avoid dehydrationl.
Some IBS-D patients open their bowels at least three times in the
morning before leaving home. Sometimes they are late for work.
2) Irritable
bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) – The
irritable bowel syndrome signs and symptoms are different from IBS-D.
The signs and symptoms are:
a) Straining to defecate –A person suffering from IBS-C often
has difficulty moving his or her bowels. It is often the case that the
person has to make a huge effort in order to evacuate stool from his or
her body. In some cases, there could be pain during bowel movement.
This can be distressing to a person with IBS-C
b) Hard/ lumpy stool – Hard, dry or lumpy stool is a common sign
and symptom of irritable bowel syndrome with constipation. This
is because there is not enough water in the stool. The transit
time or the time for fecal matter to pass along the colon is
considerably longer than in IBS-D. The longer it takes, the more water
is absorbed, leaving the stool hard and difficult to evacuate..
c) Abnormal bowel frequency – A person suffering from IBS-C is often
unable to defecate more than 3 times a week. An abnormal frequency in
defecation could be dangerous as it could cause toxins to build up in
the digestive tract. Less than three times a week is considered as
constipation.
3) Irritable bowel syndrome alternating
(IBS-A) – In this condition,
the signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome
characteristically alternate. This can
be very difficult for the person with IBS-A as he or she needs to
constantly adjust his
or her diet in order to accommodate the symptoms.
In the three types of IBS, there are some common signs and
symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome:
Abdominal pain – People with irritable bowel syndrome often experience
mild to severe pain in their abdominal area. This is a symptom
triggered by eating various types of foods or even stress. The pain
results from strong peristaltic contractions of the large bowel leading
to spasm. This irritable bowel syndrome sign and symptom is often
relieved as soon as a person defecates.
Sudden change in bowel frequency – This irritable bowel syndrome
symptom could either be an increase in the frequency of defecation or
it could mean a decrease in bowel frequency.
Bloating is a common feature in Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
