Guide to
Irritable Bowel
Syndrome.
Urgency
in IBS. Can it be controlled by the mind?
Irritable
bowel syndrome is classified as MUD. Medically unexplained disorder. No
one knows the true cause. No treatment works for everyone yet it
affects up to 20% globally. There is no cure. There is no
structural abnormality in the gut. Increasingly experts are looking at
the body-mind explanation to IBS and advising treatment such as
cognitive behavioural therapy, psychotherapy, biofeedback, and
hypnotherapy. Professor Carlson, neuropsychiatrist suggested that in
MUD the control of the body by the brain is faulty.
Faecal
incontinence is the biggest fear for IBS sufferers especially in public
or in company. At home where a sufferer is within easy reach of the
toilet, if she had a sudden urge to open her bowels, she rushes to the
toilet and the explosive bowel movement quickly follows. Her thoughts?
“I am so glad I was not out of door and away from the toilet.”
The fact is faecal
incontinence is not common. Let us suppose she was shopping in town.
She normally stays within easy reach of the public toilet because her
urgency does not allow her too much waiting time. Today, however, she
was directed to another shop where the item she is looking for is in
stock. While in the store, she suddenly has a strong urge to open her
bowels. The public toilet is ten minutes away.
Her biggest fear
is that she will have an accident. The likelihood, however, is that she
will not. Although her fear is real, deep down, her subconscious mind
is working hard to obey her command. “I must get to the toilet before
hell breaks loose.” This demand on her subconscious mind is strong and
the dutiful servant obliges. As soon as she is on the toilet, the
subconscious mind releases control and the explosive bowel movement
follows. Her thoughts. “Boy that was close.” Her subconscious mind
simply followed instructions it was given.
There are
instances recorded when individuals did superhuman things under
desperate circumstances. Things they were never able to do normally
The same applies,
though not as powerfully, when you have the urge to defaecate and you
are far away from the toilet. Although you are panicky, the fear of
embarrassment and humiliation drives you on. You resist the urge.
]On the other
hand, if you resign yourself to the fact that you will not make it to
the toilet that is exactly what will happen. Incontinence follows. This
has a negative effect and IBS in such a scenario is likely to get worse.
If you can control
urgency for ten minutes out of doors, positive messages reach and embed
in your subconscious mind. In future you know you can control urgency
for ten minutes. This is the first building block for better control of
IBS.
Hypnotherapy can
produce total control of IBS and all the hypnotist does is remove
negative messages from your subconscious mind and replace them with
strong powerful ones. Gut directed hypnotherapy plant images in the
mind such as the gut as a river flowing smoothly along.
If it can be done
by hypnotherapy, it can be done by the power of the mind.
